The Bayside Health Sciences Academy (HSA) is currently in its sixth year of operation. Students come from every middle school and many private and parochial schools in Virginia Beach. This academy welcomes all students who may be considering a career in the medical sciences or who are interested in exploring the many opportunities the specialized curricula offer. Courses such as Human Anatomy, Physiology & Pathophysiology, Medical Microbiology, Comparative Anatomy, Hereditary Medicine, Scientific Research, Forensic Medicine and Biophysics give the student an excellent foundation in the medical sciences. The HSA is an active Member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology. This academy has an agreement with Eastern Virginia Medical School regarding conditional admissions to medical school for Academy graduates. EVMS has also given academy teachers and students full access to their medical database, ordinarily just for medical staff and students. Students gain valuable clinical experience during their junior and senior years as they rotate and intern through various medical and clinical sites. This is the third summer that academy juniors have the unique opportunity to attend Camp Medicine and Camp Vet Medicine at St. George’s University in Grenada. Previous campers say that this experience has been the highlight of their high school career and has proven to solidify their interest and passion for the medical sciences. In addition, the Health Sciences Academy has several clubs that add to the philosophy of community involvement and to the addition of information regarding medicine. These clubs include the Medical Honor Society, Translators for Peace, the Interact Club, the Explorers Club, and the Research Club.
