Cell Phone Usage

Use it and you lose it!

As a reminder to all students, there are changes to the Code of Student Conduct at the high school level for inappropriate use of cell phones.

For a number of years high school students have been permitted to possess, display, or use cell phones before or after the instructional day. This privilege will still remain in effect, but there is a need to minimize their disruption during the instructional day.  Effective with the start of the 2007-2008 school year, the discipline consequences for using cell phone during the instructional day are more severe than previous years.

The instructional day is defined as the moment the student enters the school building to the final dismissal bell. Please keep in mind, the instructional day includes but is not limited to, study halls, lunch break, class changes, and any other structured or non-structured instructional activity that occurs during the normal school day. Should a high school student activate, display, or use a cell phone or any portable communication device during the instructional day, in accordance the school division’s Discipline Guidelines, the resulting discipline is as follows:

Offense                                 Discipline Action
First Offense                           Level 4 /In School Suspension (ISS)
Second Offense                      Level 5/ Out of School Suspension (OSS) 1-5 days
Third Offense                          Level 6/OSS 6-10 days
Fourth Offense                        Level 7/OSS Long Term Suspension (more than 10 days)

In addition to the discipline action listed above, school officials will take possession of the cell phone or portable communication device for 24-four hours. Specific times may be established by school officials for parents/legal guardians/adult students to retrieve such devices.
